This Month: June

Welcome to June edition of This Month! Becky White, Communications Officer give us the update on what has got the team talking…

Doing the Double: IS4

This month we welcomed IS4Ac cohort 4 and IS4L cohort 3 who both had their first workshop as part of Haelo’s flagship improvement training programme.

Improvement Science for Academics (IS4Ac) developed and delivered in partnership with the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC) and Improvement Science for Leaders (IS4L) are bespoke team based training programmes in improvement science that include a blend of web-based learning, improvement coaching and site visits.

Beginning with an introduction and overview of the origins of Improvement Science, the teams were then treated to an IS4 alumnus presentation followed by the theory of Profound Knowledge, Model for Improvement and Understanding Systems.

Call for change after Catheter paper exposes avoidable harm

New paper published: Variation in the prevalence of urinary catheters: a profile of National Health Service patients in England.

Staff from Haelo, alongside other authors, have published an analysis of NHS Safety Thermometer data. The study included over 9 million patients surveyed from June 2012 – April 2016 and by using data from the NHS Safety Thermometer database analysed national trends over time in across different demographic groups, settings and specialties. They found that, despite us knowing that many urinary catheters are unnecessary, no group saw clinically significant changes over time. Catheters are a major source of patient harm due to increased risk of urinary tract infections and the authors call for greater awareness of this issue.

Congratulations to Maxine, Abigail, Cameron and Amber from Haelo on a fantastic achievement!

Human Factors Conference 2017 #HFC17

After checking in online with our boarding passes ready, the Human Factors Conference 2017 was ready for take off! This unique UK inter-agency event, set underneath the wings of the iconic Concorde, brought together professionals from across Healthcare, Aviation and the Fire and Rescue Service.

It was a fantastic two days at the Human Factors Conference 2017 with sessions on leadership, standards of practice, situational awareness and physiological effects on decision-making and included speakers Martin Bromiley, Captain Jim Harlow, Professor Jon Cole and Captain Mike Bannister with a mesmerising after dinner speech followed by John Prescott (not that one!) who sang the night away.

It was an exciting, insightful and informative with fascinating content, speakers and entertainment all nestled under an amazing feat of engineering. Feedback from the event was incredibly positive with social engagement gaining Haelo 70 new followers in one day. Thank you to Heather Gallie and Simon Hamilton for organising the event and our very own Robbie, Neil, Vicky and Becky for making it such a success for Haelo!

Dashboard Launch event at HQ

The Safer Salford team were proud to launch the new Safer Intelligence dashboard this month.

Subject matter experts and senior leaders from across the Salford Health and Care economy were welcomed to Haelo headquarters for a workshop to get hands-on with the dashboard and decide the ‘who, when and where’ of how the dashboard will be implemented.

The dashboard encourages viewers to ask “what can we learn about safety?” and “are we getting safer?” It delivers a small selection of data on specific harms (falls and medication errors) and broad themes (resilient operations and behaviours) to give an oversight of how systems are interacting and whether people are becoming safer. Find out more and take a look at the dashboard at Safer Salford.

We have a winner!
