Celebrating Haelo – Barnet, Enfield and Haringey


On day 6 of Celebrating Haelo, we’re focussing on the programme developed and delivered for Barnet, Enfield & Haringey NHS Mental Health Trust (BEH). Below, Stuart Clough, Senior Improvement Advisor, reflects on the programme.

One of the most interesting pieces of work that I have been privileged to work on, was our 2-year commission with Barnet, Enfield and Haringey NHS Mental Health Trust which started in September 2016. It is a programme that I was the lead for, and I also had the opportunity to provide improvement advisor expertise for, along with some of my colleagues.

Haelo were asked to work with BEH in order for them to go in a new direction – one of which had an identified approach to quality improvement, but probably just as importantly, to start to develop a culture of continuous improvement for the organisation and employees. The organisation was starting out on its improvement journey, so it was important to get the building blocks right. Haelo’s remit, to begin with, was to really understand the organisation and help to connect its strategic priorities with the frontline teams, in the pursuit of improving quality of care through quality improvement.

Over the 2 years, we have seen some great improvement initiatives, with some great results seen. There is so much that the organisation should be proud of, as it now embarks on its third year of QI, where it has recognised capability skills throughout the organisation and it looks towards the next step. About the programme

Beginning on the 1 September 2016, Barnet, Enfield & Haringey NHS Mental Health Trust (BEH) commissioned Haelo to develop and deliver a strategic vision, creating an organisational culture which continuously improves, using recognised Quality Improvement (QI) methodology. This strategy would provide improved quality and experience for service users, patients, their families / carers and the BEH workforce, aligning with the organisations Enablement Strategy ‘Live, Love, Do’.

BEH’s aim was to empower frontline teams to make changes which enrich the patient experience using a rigorous and robust change methodology. To achieve this, Haelo co-designed a programme of work with the BEH Leadership team following a number of consultation prior to the commission. The agreed programme of work included;

  • Senior Leadership support
  • Delivery of a QI Programme
  • Training of staff in QI
  • Assessing the QI capability of staff across the organisation

As the partnership between Haelo and BEH came to a close on the 31 August 2018, the organisation now has key personnel trained in QI from Executive level to senior management, but also a number of employees have been through an established QI capability programme, which will commence into its third year following the Summit event of Year 2 (scheduled for November 2018). To illustrate this, Figure 1 highlights some of the key outputs as part of the programme of work.

A number of key lessons learned have been identified on completion of the two year QI programme. Challenges and achievements in taking a strategic, approach to delivering improvement across an organisation are summarised by the following headings:

  • Delivering improvement in a changing context
  • Engaging frontline teams in developing improvement
  • Pre-work and lead in development time
  • Aim setting and measurement capability
